What is Chiropractic?

Picture
Chiropractic means 'to do by hand'. Chiropractic is a safe and gentle approach to health care, that does not require medications or invasive procedures. Chiropractors understand that the brain and nervous system are the controllers of the entire body, and that the body has an innate ability to heal itself. Through a careful assessment of the nervous system, a Chiropractor can determine where the messages of the nervous system are being affected. By clearing this interference the body starts to improve the areas that are not working at 100%.

Jana Kingston uses Sacro-Occipital Technique (SOT) to assess and gently adjust the nervous system. This involves assessment of the whole body - structural, visceral and cranial - and looks for the cause not just a quick fix of the symptoms. (Often the symptoms disappear quickly, but that is a secondary result to adjusting the main problem!)

Chiropractic can help with so many problems, not just the sore back that people most commonly associate with Chiropractors. This is what most people first come in with but then they want to stay because they can see how so many other areas of their health are being improved with a regular Chiropractic check up.

At Hands on Health Chiropractic Jana has seen great improvements for patients:
- with headaches
- having difficulty concentrating
- with digestive problems like 'IBS"
- with balance or dizziness problems, ringing in the ears
- not coping well with stress
- with Indigestion
- with recurring shoulder pains or other recurring injuries
- suffering from respiratory conditions like Asthma
- that are pregnant and don't want to take any medications
- with hormonal or adrenal imbalances
- and so much more

If you're not sure if Chiropractic could help you, call Jana at the clinic on 0421 285 822 to talk to her about it.

What is a Doula?

Picture
'Doula' is a Greek word for 'woman servant' or 'caregiver' and generally assumed in Australia to be a 'birth companion or support person'.

A Doula provides physical and emotional support for a woman during labour, as well as pre and post natal visits. She is able to be a woman's advocate during labour to help her achieve the birth she wants, not what someone else wants. If things aren't going to plan, a Doula is there to try to keep as much of the mum's ideals as possible and talk through your options and decisions. A Doula will try to keep mum relaxed, focussed and as comfortable as possible. A Doula will try to keep you safe.

A Doula does NOT replace dad. She should be able to welcome him, include him, and encourage him, (if that's what the couple want) with the confidence of someone that understands the birth process! A Doula does NOT perform any medical procedures or tests. She is a layperson, who is there to support you, stand up for you and talk things through with you. She does NOT make decisions for you. It is your birth.

Having a birth companion such as a Doula has been shown to:
- Reduce the rate of Cesarean section, forceps, vacuum
- Increase your ability to cope with pain therefore less likely to need pain medications
- be more likely to be successful at breastfeeding
- be more likely to view the birth positively
- help the father be involved (if he wants) in supporting mum
- improve mum's self-esteem and lower rates of depression

Having a Doula to support you through the whole active labour provides continuity of care, and someone that is there to look after your best interests - no one else's. For the time and care that you get from a Doula the cost is minimal, and the value is priceless.

Please talk to Jana if you are interested in having a Doula support you. Even if she can not attend your birth she will happily help you find another Doula to support you.
